SUMMARY:Scoring Americana and the Hollywood Western Sound
DESCRIPTION:The ASA is excited to be joined by composer and orchestrator David Krystal to take a look at Aaron Copland’s Rodeo and how he utilized techniques from it in a cue from his brand new album! \n“Tunes in the Key of Hollywood” is an EP release of classic Hollywood-style film tunes recorded with a 70-piece orchestra at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City\, CA. Filled with colorful orchestrations\, soaring tunes\, and drama at every turn\, it’s a thrilling adventure that should satisfy all fans of the genre. \nDavid began working with composer Benjamin Wallfisch to orchestrate the Gore Verbinski thriller\, A Cure for Wellness\, starring Dane DeHaan and Mia Goth. Shortly afterwards\, he re-teamed with Wallfisch\, legendary composer Hans Zimmer\, and world-renowned artist Pharrell Williams as the Supervising Orchestrator of the Oscar-nominated film Hidden Figures. David has continued working with Wallfisch on DC blockbusters Shazam! and The Flash.\n\nFollowing the success of Hidden Figures\, David went on to orchestrate some of the most successful horror films of all time\, including It\, Annabelle Creation\, and It: Chapter Two. Additionally\, David contributed to Christopher Nolan’s masterpiece\, Dunkirk\, and Ron Howard’s gripping drama Thirteen Lives. David is also a frequent collaborator of composer Trevor Gureckis\, whose work can be heard on the 2021 M. Night Shyamalan thriller Old and the Amazon Prime series Hunters. \nOther recent projects include orchestrating the Apple TV+ drama series The Crowded Room\, orchestrations on Joseph Shirley’s score to Creed III\, and orchestrations for Nick Urata on the Awkwafina Hulu comedy feature Quiz Lady. SUMMARY:Music of Scavenger's Reign with Nicolas Snyder
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we talk to Nicolas Snyder about his music for the rapidly emerging cult hit Scavenger’s Reign\, a breathtaking animated sci-fi series now streaming on Max. Board member Josh Lucan contacted Nicolas only a few minutes into watching the first episode because he found the music so unique and inspiring. Snyder describes himself as a forager and you will find this an apt term. He will take us through his process of manipulating found sounds and material from the internet into his unique textures and timbres. While electronic textures are now commonplace in film music\, Snyder’s idiosyncratic approach effectively situates the story in an unfamiliar and alien environment. We will also delve into the evolution of the score\, discussing how he navigated the four-year hiatus between the first two episodes to develop melodic themes from the primarily textural first episode. \nSomewhat buried in the ocean of content we swim in these days Scavenger’s Reign is rapidly emerging by word of mouth as a modern sci-fi classic. If you haven’t seen it yet\, join our watch party. We will screen the first two episodes on March 29th\, 7pm\, the night before the event and hang out and discuss over chat. \nMARCH 29th 7pm – WATCH PARTY!\nWe will be holding a free\, private watch party of the first two episodes of Scavenger’s Reign the night before the event! All ASA members with a Discount account are invited to come hangout\, chat\, and preview the show and the music. To join the livestream\, you must have a Discord account and join the ASA server. You will have to follow the instructions on the Welcome page of our server before you get access to other channels. \nDiscord Server link: https://discord.gg/KUS7P65RJz\nDiscord Watch Party Event link: https://discord.com/events/958891035344400394/1219758451790446783\n\n  \nMARCH 30th – Score Study at the Lyric Hyperion (NEW VENUE!)\n2106 HYPERION AVENUE\nLos Angeles\, CA 90027 \nCoffee and pastries will be available for purchase at the venue. SUMMARY:Kevin Kiner and the Music of Ahsoka
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, April 14th at Laemmle North Hollywood as we welcome back Kevin Kiner to discuss his score to the recent hit show “Ahsoka” on Disney+! This is Kevin’s first foray into live action Star Wars\, but hardly the beginning of his involvement in the Star Wars Universe\, having previously scored over 200 episodes of the animated shows “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels”.\n\nKevin will talk about his process of going from mockup to stage\, recording each episode with live orchestra at the Newman Stage on Fox Studios. Joining Kevin will be his co-composers Sean and Deana Kiner\, discussing their own contributions to the score. Orchestrator Nolan Markey will also be joining to discuss the collaborative process. We’ll be digging into specific cues from the series\, hearing how Kevin’s music has evolved from both the original scores from the films and his own themes from the previous shows\, as the characters make their transitions from animation to live-action. Kevin will also be printing out a limited number of scores to give out on a first-come\, first-serve basis!\n\nAnnie Award-winning composer Kevin Kiner has also been honored with multiple Emmy and other Annie Nominations\, and won 20 BMI Film & TV Awards\, making him one of the most versatile and sought-after composer in Hollywood. Over more than a decade\, working with George Lucas and Dave Filoni\, Kevin scored all seven seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars\, which earned him the 2021 Annie Award for “Best Music – TV/ Media” for the series finale episode “Victory and Death”\, as well as a Primetime Emmy nomination. His other diverse credits include HBO Max’s Peacemaker\, Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico\, HBO Max’s Titans and Doom Patrol\, Showtime’s City on a Hill\, AMC’s hit series Dark Winds and Hell on Wheels\, CBS’s CSI: Miami\, and CW’s Jane the Virgin. From his intimate\, soloistic guitar music to his grand orchestral music\, Kevin has transported audience from deserts to metropolises – and even to a galaxy far\, far away. \n  \nASA members! Well\, maybe not the latter\, but definitely a lot of the former! \nRon will fill us in on what he’s been up to since moving to beautiful rural Washington State\, and what it’s been like composing without the pressures of airdate schedules and crazy executives giving conflicting feedback. \nHe has also generously offered to answer any questions that you may have! Please email your questions ahead of time to reuven@scoringarts.com. \nIn addition\, we are rebooting our long dormant Adventures in Listening segment of our events with a bang! We will be joined by saxophonist Doug Webb\, as well as John Mitchell and his woodwind quintet (Quinn Johnson on Piano\, Bob Crosby Clarinet\, Laura Osborne Flute\, Phill Feather Oboe\, John Mitchell Bassoon\, Suzette Moriarty French Horn) to begin the morning inspired by the live performances of these wonderful musicians in the beautiful natural acoustics of the First Baptist Church of Glendale. A special thanks to Ron for the idea\, and for inviting these wonderful musicians to join us. \nYou won’t want to miss this event! If you attended ASA events back in the days Ron ran the Ravel Study Group\, you already know that. If you have yet to experience his presence and profundity in person\, this is your chance to do so! \nAs always\, a light breakfast and coffee will be served\, and the event will be followed by lunch\, giving us the chance to socialize\, meet new friends\, and catch up with old ones. \nWe will also be live-streaming this event! We do want to give our community around the world the chance to be a part of this event in real time. If you are in the LA area\, however\, I invite you to take advantage of the opportunity to be with us in person to hear our guest players move molecules through physical space and be inspired directly\, as well as partake in our longstanding Spaghettios tradition. (Don’t worry…we will not be serving actual Spaghettios!) \nIn the meantime\, feel free to get a preview of what’s in store for you with Ron’s video series The Composer’s Journey! \nTickets – $30 Everyone is welcome to attend this event! SUMMARY:Michael Paraskevas and Agatha All Along
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special session with composer Michael Paraskevas as we dive into the Emmy-winning Agatha All Along. Michael will walk us through the creative process behind his score and share insights on collaborating with Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. Michael’s co-score to Agatha All Along conjures a spellbinding sonic journey down the Witches’ Road. Drawing from classic horror movie influences and broken instrumentation\, the music shifts from haunting suspense to twisted playfulness\, echoing Agatha’s mischievous unpredictability. From psychedelic rock and ’80s synths to witchy folklore and modern pop production\, it brews an eclectic soundscape that subverts the traditional superhero sound and provides a unique storytelling voice to the Marvel Universe. Don’t miss this behind-the-scenes look at one of the most memorable musical moments in recent TV history. This discussion will be moderated by Tim Davies. \nAs always\, we will be providing coffee\, light pastries in the morning and lunch following the event. This event is open to everyone! ASA members\, please sign in to your account to view your discount code below. \n\n\n \n  \nMichael Paraskevas is a Los Angeles-based composer deeply immersed in storytelling through film and visual media. An enthusiastic collaborator and nostalgic film nerd\, he loves exploring a variety of styles in his music and enjoys working with ambitious artists to share engaging and impactful stories. Most recently\, he scored the Disney+/Marvel series\, Agatha All Along starring Kathryn Hahn\, alongside Christophe Beck. The show’s musical palette is highlighted by its subversion of the traditional superhero sound\, its fusion of horror with other recognizable musical styles\, and its exploration of eclectic sounds and evocative textures. Michael’s musical fingerprints can be found across a wide spectrum of genres\, including projects such as Hawkeye\, El Tonto Por Cristo\, Unspoken\, Frozen II\, This World Won’t Break\, and the Emmy-nominated score to WandaVision. Texas-born and raised\, Michael studied music composition at the University of Tulsa and film scoring at the Pacific Northwest Film Scoring Program\, where he studied with Hummie Mann. Since then\, he has worked closely with distinguished composer\, Christophe Beck\, on many of today’s biggest hits.
