SUMMARY:Bernard Herrmann's Psycho Score Study
DESCRIPTION:60 years ago\, Alfred Hitchcock released PSYCHO and forever changed the fabric and DNA of the cinema’s thriller\, suspense\, and horror genre. Bernard Herrmann\, the legendary composer\, similarly changed the DNA of suspense/thriller film music and greatly contributed to the film’s success and influence. \nJoin the Academy of Scoring Arts on October 31st\, Halloween morning\, as we dissect Herrmann’s string orchestra masterwork.  We will take a detailed look at cues from the celebrated score with regard to composition\, string technique and effects\, and the role the score plays in amplifying the psychological subtext of the film. William V. Malpede and Michael McGeHee will lead the study\, joined by special guest Steve Bartek (orchestrator with Danny Elfman on PSYCHO\, 1998).

For over twenty years\, John has delivered one extraordinary score after the next\, and his work in the How To Train Your Dragon and Bourne franchises is now legendary. In 2018\, he scored Solo: A Star Wars Story with a new theme by John Williams\, then stepped into the classical world with his choral album Hubris. Host Kaya Savas will interview John\, followed by audience Q&A. \nTICKET OPTIONS: \nTwo types of tickets are offered: \n1. Free ticket to the live stream \n2. Free ticket to the live stream plus autographed items (limit 30)* \n*Only 30 of these tickets will be available on a first-come basis. DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, July 26 for an informative discussion with veteran orchestrator and conductor Tim Davies\, who will walk you through his process preparing for and then executing a string recording session. We’ll start with “just the notes” — what happens when you begin to populate your score page and how the players will interpret your notation. Then we’ll cover how to articulate your intent\, and striking the right balance between not being specific enough vs. overdoing it with additional markings. Many of us begin with a MIDI demo; we’ll cover how to translate that demo\, how to replicate effects\, and how to get the best out of recording live strings. We’ll also talk about distance sessions and the unique challenges that this Covid season presents. DESCRIPTION:In celebration of the ten-year anniversary of the Fans Of Film Music Society\, we are proud to host Oscar-nominated composer John Powell as our guest of honor for this special co-hosted event with the Academy of Scoring Arts. For over twenty years\, John has delivered one extraordinary score after the next\, and his work in the How To Train Your Dragon and Jason Bourne franchises is now legendary. In 2018 he scored Solo with a new theme by John Williams. John stepped into the classical world with his choral album Hubris. Host Kaya Savas will interview John\, then we’ll feature a bit of Q&A and autograph signing\, then a buffet pizza/pasta/salad lunch will be served\, courtesy of Vitello’s Restaurant.

SUMMARY:Legends of Film Music: Alex North
DESCRIPTION:Composer Alex North brought a fresh perspective to film scoring. His mastery of capturing the psychological underpinnings of any narrative\, coupled with his unique brand of modernism\, made him one the most revered figures in film music history. On March 7\, join us as we examine North’s ingenious use of themes\, motifs\, and even the intentional absence of music\, during three sequences of John Huston’s THE MISFITS\, a gritty\, contemporary Western set in and around Reno\, Nevada\, and starring Clark Gable (in his final role)\, Marilyn Monroe\, and Montgomery Clift. Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY inspired Alex North to create some of his most brilliant\, exciting musical compositions. The director’s preference of pre-existing music over an original score led to the rejection of North’s work\, but some of the composer’s ideas lived on in other projects. We will look at the 2001 conductor score and will examine some of North’s music in sync with picture\, as originally intended. Composers William V. Malpede and Edwin Wendler will co-host this event and help us get deep into the work of Alex North.

SUMMARY:Deep in the Asteroid Field: A Score Study
DESCRIPTION:Join us on February 8 as the Scoring Arts team is joined by composer and orchestrator David Russell (Star Wars Rebels\, Clone Wars\, and hundreds of others) to help us take a deep dive into the tumultuous “Asteroid Field” cue from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. Thanks to our dedicated team of score prep and mockup volunteers\, we’ll be able to take apart John Williams’s deep orchestration and get into the nuts and bolts of how some of the most exciting music from the Star Wars repertoire was created. Composers and orchestrators won’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind behind-the-scenes look at one of our most revered masterpieces of modern action film music. \nDavid Glen Russell originally wanted to be Randy Rhoads or Eddie Van Halen\, shredding on the guitar to millions of adoring fans. In pursuit of this\, he promptly entered the Classical Guitar program at Virginia Commonwealth University. Even though he was a guitar major\, he always had an interest in composition. During a viewing of Tim Burton’s Batman\, Russell was captivated by Danny Elfman’s dynamic score. That was when he fully realized the mutualistic symbiosis which can be forged between film and music. The die was cast and he determined the specific path he wished to pursue as his life’s work. After graduation from VCU\, Russell continued his education at University of Miami\, receiving a Master of Music in Media Writing and Production. Wishing to pursue composition for film and other mass media genres\, with a concentration on sweeping orchestral works in the vein of the masters\, but revolutionized for modern cinema\, he moved to Los Angeles. David immediately became involved in many different areas of film composition\, assisting John Frizzell as orchestrator on The Rich Man’s Wife and The Empty Mirror\, which premiered at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival. During his tenure with composer Shirley Walker\, Russell worked as a sequencer programmer on the film\, Turbulence\, and served as an orchestrator on Superman: the Animated series. David had the opportunity to work with Chris Young as a synthesist on Spider-Man 3 and several other films. During this time\, Russell became increasingly involved with work in horror films\, notably Ghost Rider\, Drag Me To Hell\, The Grudge 1 and 2\, and The Uninvited. In this genre\, Russell developed a capacity for emotive\, ambient music which invoked intense trepidation while maintaining musical integrity. He also contributed additional music to the films Untraceable\, Love Happens\, and The Uninvited. \nAn award-winning composer on his own\, Russell scored the historical features Wicked Spring and No Retreat from Destiny\, along with the NBC Special Farrah’s Story and the series Chasing Farrah and Roger Corman’s Black Scorpion. In the Oscar-nominated film\, Black Swan\, Russell created the recordings that were used during shooting for composer Clint Mansell. David orchestrated composer Michael Brook’s beautiful score for the film Brooklyn. The film was honored with an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture in 2016. He once again worked with Brook\, orchestrating his score for the upcoming feature Stronger starring Jake Gyllenhaal. \nMost recently\, David has been spending time in the Star Wars universe\, working with Kevin Kiner providing additional music for the animated Star Wars series\, Star Wars: The Clone Wars\, and Star Wars Rebels. Considering that the score of Star Wars: A New Hope\, was the first album Russell ever owned\, he is thrilled and humbled to be alongside John Williams as one of a select few who have contributed over 11 hours of music to the Star Wars canon. David has received acclaim for his work in this echelon\, particularly for intense action such as battle and chase scenes.

SUMMARY:Scott Healy's Ellington Group: Quantum Harmony and Early Jazz\, featuring Joshua Moshier
DESCRIPTION:Ellington Study Groups are back! Our next class on February 1st will be jam-packed with a detailed of some of the basic harmony of jazz music. I’ll start with a deep dive into early jazz harmony\, focusing on how improvising players manipulated and exploited the “classical” chromaticism of popular music and the evolved late 19th century European tradition. I’ll talk about interpreting diminished passing chords\, secondary dominants\, other chromaticism\, and some of the ways the complex jazz harmonic tradition evolved from three and four-voice harmony and voice leading. I want to take a look at the classic Ellington piece “East St. Louis Toodle-oo\,” and if we have time we’ll get into the more modern polyphonic music of artists like Steve Lacy\, the “Downtown” NYC sound\,  and some music from the 21st century “Trad” jazz movement.\n\nAfter a short schmooze break I’ll bring up our special guest Joshua Moshier. Joshua is a magnificent jazz pianist and composer\, and has become an established presence as composer for film and TV. He’ll discuss his career\, his jazz background\, how he combines improvisation with composed material\, and the process of recording and editing scores which feature improvised music.\n\nJoshua’s live-action work includes scoring the FX series Baskets\, starring Zach Galifianakis\, the Emmy-nominated Netflix series Special from Jim Parsons’ That’s Wonderful Productions\, the Netflix film Happy Anniversary from writer/director Jared Stern\, and the main title music for the Emmy-nominated IFC series Documentary Now! starring Fred Armisen and Bill Hader.\n\nIn animation\, Joshua’s work includes the upcoming HBO Max series Looney Tunes Cartoons\, the Netflix series Dragons: Rescue Riders from DreamWorks\, and the viral animated hit Sidewalk\, directed by Celia Bullwinkel.\n\nJoshua studied music at Northwestern University. Throughout and after college\, he delved deeply into the Chicago jazz scene\, performing as a pianist with Marquis Hill\, Chris Madsen\, Milton Suggs\, John Moulder and many others. In his own group co-led with Mike Lebrun\, he released Joy Not Jaded and The Local Colorists\, as well as his Chamber Music America commissioned work Touch and Go: The Studs Terkel Project.\n\nJoshua is an alumnus of the Sundance Institute Film Music Program (Narrative Feature) and the BMI Conducting Workshop.
