He will discuss the challenges of writing and recording hours of score in a short amount of time\, and walking in the footsteps of previous collaborators Michael Kamen\, who composed the iconic score to Band of Brothers\, and Hans Zimmer\, who co-composed The Pacific. \nMasters of the Air is available to stream on Apple TV+! Stream it prior to our event and come with plenty of questions. \nTickets – $30 Everyone is welcome to attend this event! ASA members will receive a discount. SUMMARY:Kevin Kiner and the Music of Ahsoka
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, April 14th at Laemmle North Hollywood as we welcome back Kevin Kiner to discuss his score to the recent hit show “Ahsoka” on Disney+! This is Kevin’s first foray into live action Star Wars\, but hardly the beginning of his involvement in the Star Wars Universe\, having previously scored over 200 episodes of the animated shows “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels”.\n\nKevin will talk about his process of going from mockup to stage\, recording each episode with live orchestra at the Newman Stage on Fox Studios. Joining Kevin will be his co-composers Sean and Deana Kiner\, discussing their own contributions to the score. Orchestrator Nolan Markey will also be joining to discuss the collaborative process. We’ll be digging into specific cues from the series\, hearing how Kevin’s music has evolved from both the original scores from the films and his own themes from the previous shows\, as the characters make their transitions from animation to live-action. Kevin will also be printing out a limited number of scores to give out on a first-come\, first-serve basis!\n\nAnnie Award-winning composer Kevin Kiner has also been honored with multiple Emmy and other Annie Nominations\, and won 20 BMI Film & TV Awards\, making him one of the most versatile and sought-after composer in Hollywood. Over more than a decade\, working with George Lucas and Dave Filoni\, Kevin scored all seven seasons of Star Wars: The Clone Wars\, which earned him the 2021 Annie Award for “Best Music – TV/ Media” for the series finale episode “Victory and Death”\, as well as a Primetime Emmy nomination. His other diverse credits include HBO Max’s Peacemaker\, Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico\, HBO Max’s Titans and Doom Patrol\, Showtime’s City on a Hill\, AMC’s hit series Dark Winds and Hell on Wheels\, CBS’s CSI: Miami\, and CW’s Jane the Virgin. From his intimate\, soloistic guitar music to his grand orchestral music\, Kevin has transported audience from deserts to metropolises – and even to a galaxy far\, far away. \n  \nASA members! SUMMARY:Music of Scavenger's Reign with Nicolas Snyder
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we talk to Nicolas Snyder about his music for the rapidly emerging cult hit Scavenger’s Reign\, a breathtaking animated sci-fi series now streaming on Max. Board member Josh Lucan contacted Nicolas only a few minutes into watching the first episode because he found the music so unique and inspiring. Snyder describes himself as a forager and you will find this an apt term. He will take us through his process of manipulating found sounds and material from the internet into his unique textures and timbres. While electronic textures are now commonplace in film music\, Snyder’s idiosyncratic approach effectively situates the story in an unfamiliar and alien environment. We will also delve into the evolution of the score\, discussing how he navigated the four-year hiatus between the first two episodes to develop melodic themes from the primarily textural first episode. \nSomewhat buried in the ocean of content we swim in these days Scavenger’s Reign is rapidly emerging by word of mouth as a modern sci-fi classic. If you haven’t seen it yet\, join our watch party. We will screen the first two episodes on March 29th\, 7pm\, the night before the event and hang out and discuss over chat. \nMARCH 29th 7pm – WATCH PARTY!\nWe will be holding a free\, private watch party of the first two episodes of Scavenger’s Reign the night before the event! All ASA members with a Discount account are invited to come hangout\, chat\, and preview the show and the music. To join the livestream\, you must have a Discord account and join the ASA server. You will have to follow the instructions on the Welcome page of our server before you get access to other channels. \nDiscord Server link: https://discord.gg/KUS7P65RJz\nDiscord Watch Party Event link: https://discord.com/events/958891035344400394/1219758451790446783\n\n  \nMARCH 30th – Score Study at the Lyric Hyperion (NEW VENUE!)\n2106 HYPERION AVENUE\nLos Angeles\, CA 90027 \nCoffee and pastries will be available for purchase at the venue. DESCRIPTION:The ASA is excited to be joined by composer and orchestrator David Krystal to take a look at Aaron Copland’s Rodeo and how he utilized techniques from it in a cue from his brand new album! \n“Tunes in the Key of Hollywood” is an EP release of classic Hollywood-style film tunes recorded with a 70-piece orchestra at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City\, CA. Filled with colorful orchestrations\, soaring tunes\, and drama at every turn\, it’s a thrilling adventure that should satisfy all fans of the genre. \nDavid began working with composer Benjamin Wallfisch to orchestrate the Gore Verbinski thriller\, A Cure for Wellness\, starring Dane DeHaan and Mia Goth. SUMMARY:Leith Stevens' War of the Worlds Online Score Study
DESCRIPTION:Embark on an exploration of Leith Stevens’ remarkable score to the 1953 science fiction classic\, “War of the Worlds.” Despite not being widely recognized now\, Stevens was a towering figure in his day. In the 1930s he worked at CBS radio\, alongside Bernard Herrmann\, before moving on to compose for Hollywood films in the 1940s. He soon became the preferred composer for director George Pal\, crafting the scores for a trio of iconic 1950s sci-fi films: “Destination Moon\,” “When Worlds Collide\,” and “War of the Worlds.” \nStevens’ unique compositional techniques have significantly influenced the musical language of science fiction\, employing devices like stacked fourths and fifths\, melodic leaps of a seventh\, and tritone-related progressions\, which have become associated with the genre’s depiction of space and the extraterrestrial. \nIn 1954\, Stevens was instrumental in establishing the Composers and Lyricists Guild of America\, the forerunner to the current Society for Composers and Lyricists\, leading it as president for eight years. His work in the 1960s expanded into television\, where he collaborated with the then-emerging John Williams on “Lost in Space.” \nOur discussion will delve into the potential compositional links between Stevens and Williams and explore the impact of one of Stevens’ instructors\, the Russian composer and theorist Joseph Schillinger. A relatively enigmatic and underexplored figure\, Schillinger contributed unconventional music theories that possibly inspired a generation of Hollywood composers to experiment and innovate\, shaping the distinctive sound of film music during that era. \nWe will be joined by special guests William H. Rosar and Tom Schneller! Having taught film score analysis in USC’s Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television Program\, William H. Rosar is a musicologist and college lecturer specializing in the history of Hollywood film music. He is also founder and former president of the Film Music Society and editor of The Journal of Film Music. \nTom Schneller is a composer\, music theorist\, and author\, and has taught film music at Cornell University\, Ithaca College\, and Eastman School of Music. \nThis online score study is FREE for all ASA members! Please sign up to be a member here. The Zoom link be sent via email the day before the event. It will also be posted on our website. \nWatch the score study preview with ASA member Josh Lucan!

SUMMARY:Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Online Score Study Part III
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 17th\, we’ll be continuing our journey into one of the 20th century’s greatest works\, Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. This upcoming study will focus on the Infernal Dance in Movement V. Written for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes company in 1910\, it was the first of several momentous collaborations between the two men\, and interestingly\, was before Stravinsky rose to fame. In May 2023\, we started our study\, and the video from that study is available on our site for Orchestra and Philharmonic members to watch. Now it’s time to crack open that score again!\n\nIf you missed the first part\, catch up here (https://scoringarts.com/eventlibrary/stravinskys-firebird-suite-part-1/) but even if you don’t have time\, there are many pearls of composition and orchestrational genius that we’ll delve into in the new sections.\n\nThis event will be held on Zoom at 10am Pacific Time\, and we welcome all of our members (Chamber\, Orchestra\, and Philharmonic) to join for free. If you’re not a member\, sign up for any tier of membership (including our free tier\, Chamber) to get access to the live event. The link will be sent out the day before the event\, and also posted to our home page. Please spread the word via socials and we hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Michael Kamen's The Iron Giant Score Study with Chris Siddall
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first ASA event of 2024\, as we open the pages of Michael Kamen’s masterful 1999 score for The Iron Giant. This animated sci-fi film was based on a novel from 1968 and was brilliantly brought to life by Brad Bird (in his directorial debut) and Michael Kamen (in his first score for an animated movie). Set during the Cold War in 1957\, the film centers on a young boy named Hogarth Hughes\, who discovers and befriends a giant alien robot. With the help of a beatnik artist named Dean McCoppin\, Hogarth attempts to prevent the U.S. military and Kent Mansley\, a paranoid federal agent\, from finding and destroying the Giant.\n\nThe score to this film is published by Chris Siddall Music Publishing (https://www.chrissiddallmusic.com/store/p58/Iron_Giant_In_Full_Score.html) and we encourage ASA members to purchase the score ahead of time in order to enjoy the study. But even if you don’t have the score in hand\, we’ll be showing excerpts from it and\, in true ASA fashion\, breaking it down into its component parts to understand how Kamen got these magical sounds for his score. The movie itself can be streamed with a Paramount Plus Apple TV Channel subscription\, or can be rented or purchased from most major streaming platforms.\n\nThis event is FREE for all ASA members! Sign up for membership here. The Zoom info will be sent out the day before the event.

SUMMARY:Inon Zur's Score to Starfield
DESCRIPTION:The ASA is thrilled to welcome back acclaimed composer Inon Zur\, to discuss his recent score to the Bethesda Softworks game “Starfield”. Having worked with Bethesda for over two decades\, Inon spent seven years developing this sci-fi score\, which can be experienced as an hour-long live orchestral suite performed by the London Symphony Orchestra here. SUMMARY:The Music of John Williams with Special Guest Mark Richards
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a detailed exploration of John Williams’ action music with film music scholar and educator\, Mark Richards. Through several decades of study and published research Dr. Richards has uncovered an array of harmonic techniques Williams utilizes for his action writing\, including the employment of more exotic scales such octatonic\, hexatonic\, an Hungarian minor as well as dissonant bass notes and polychords. We’ll discuss how Williams crafts specific action chords from these elements\, tailoring them for varied cinematic needs – be it general action sequences\, moments of emphasis or conveying particular emotional associations. \nFor a hands-on understanding\, our study will concentrate on two particular cues from the original Star Wars trilogy: “Attacking a Star Destroyer” from “The Empire Strikes Back” and the Rancor Pit scene from “Return of the Jedi.” Through Mark Richards’ expert guidance\, attendees will gain invaluable insights into the meticulous crafting of music that has delighted us as filmgoers but frequently puzzled us as composers and analysts. \nThis is a free event for ASA members! Members will be given the Zoom link the day prior to the event. Sign up to become an ASA member here.

SUMMARY:Igor Stravinsky's Firebird Online Score Study Part. II
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, July 29\, we’ll be continuing our journey into one of the 20th century’s greatest works\, Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. Written for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes company in 1910\, it was the first of several momentous collaborations between the two men\, and interestingly\, was before Stravinsky rose to fame. In May\, we started our study\, and the video from that study is available on our site for Orchestra and Philharmonic members to watch. Now it’s time to crack open that score again as we focus on the third and fourth sections\, the Variations and the Rondo.\n\nIf you missed the first part\, catch up here (https://scoringarts.com/eventlibrary/stravinskys-firebird-suite-part-1/) but even if you don’t have time\, there are many pearls of composition and orchestrational genius that we’ll delve into in the new sections.\n\nThis event will be held on Zoom at 10am Pacific Time\, and we welcome all of our members (Chamber\, Orchestra\, and Philharmonic) to join for free. If you’re not a member\, sign up for any tier of membership (including our free tier\, Chamber) to get access to the live event. The link will be sent out the day before the event\, and also posted to our home page. Please spread the word via socials and we hope to see you there!

SUMMARY:Garry Schyman and the Music of VR Game Torn
DESCRIPTION:Father’s Day with the ASA! Join us this Sunday morning\, June 18th\, at the Autry Museum Theater\, as we welcome back acclaimed composer Garry Schyman to talk about his score to the VR game Torn. \nTorn explores the abandoned mansion of the famed Dr. Lawrence Talbot\, who went missing decades earlier. It begins as a narrative puzzle game reactivating the mysterious machines that bring the mansion to life\, and then evolves into a dark\, character-driven story slowly uncovering the truth about Talbot\, discovering in the process a new dimension called “The Parallel.” Garry’s musical score sets a misleadingly beautiful atmosphere amid the bizarre gadgets and disturbing experiments\, isolated deep within a forgotten forest hiding a dark secret. \nThe soundtrack for Torn was released on Varèse Sarabande Records. \nWe will look at an orchestral suite of the score\, which is being performed Sunday evening as part of the GLOCKE ImPuls »GAME SYMPHONY«by the Landesjugendorchester Bremen in Germany\, and talk about the genesis of the various themes and textures\, as well as how they were integrated into the gameplay. \nThis event is at the Autry Museum in Griffith Park! Ample free parking available. Lunch will not be provided for this event\, but we will informally meet afterwards at the Museum Cafe! All are welcome to attend this event\, but ASA members will receive a discount.  \nSign in to your account to see your promo code below! \n\n\n \n \nBecome an ASA member here!\n \nGarry Schyman’s award-winning music can be heard in nearly every audio-visual media\, including feature films\, prime-time television\, and video games. His haunting orchestral scores for the globally acclaimed video games BioShock\, BioShock 2\, and BioShock Infinite have earned him multiple awards\, including top honors for Best Original Score from the British Academy of Film & Television (BAFTA) and the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. \nAs one of the world’s most celebrated composers of video game music\, Schyman is notable for his versatility of style and unique ability to fluidly draw from multiple eclectic sources of inspiration. He captured the fantasy world of Tolkien for the adventure game Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor (nominated for a BAFTA award) and Middle-Earth: Shadow of War and paid playful homage to ’50s sci-fi with his score for the game Destroy All Humans! (followed by two sequels). He accelerated heartbeats with his thunderous orchestral score for EA’s Dante’s Inferno and gave a nod to the hypnotic style of Bernard Herrmann in the mystery game Voyeur.

SUMMARY:Christopher Willis and the Music of Cat Burglar
DESCRIPTION:Join us on June 10 as special guest Christopher Willis joins us to discuss his Emmy-winning score to Netflix’s interactive cartoon Cat Burglar (2022). The show was the brainchild of Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker\, who wanted to expand on the technology behind the choose-your-own-adventure Black Mirror episode “Bandersnatch”\, while also creating a loving homage to the work of MGM animation pioneer Tex Avery in the 1940s and 50s. The music\, in turn\, pays tribute to the work of MGM’s resident musical genius Scott Bradley. Whereas Carl Stalling typically worked with the entire Warner Brothers studio orchestra\, Bradley at MGM worked with a smaller group\, part big band and part Schoenbergian chamber orchestra. Chris embarked on a deep dive into Bradley’s work\, scoring the show for the same line-up used for countless Tom & Jerry cartoons. Where Cat Burglar notably differed from the classics\, of course\, was that the music had to adapt in real time to the almost limitless number of possible paths the player might take\, forcing him to grapple with how 1950s cartoon music can meet the demands of a 2020s video game.\n\nThis is an in-person event taking place at the Laemmle theater in NOHO! You do not have to be an ASA member to attend\, but we offer discounts to our members.\nWe will provide coffee and pastries prior to the event. The theater concession stand will also be open.\n5240 Lankershim Blvd\, North Hollywood\, CA 91601\n\n\nSign in to your account to see your promo code below! \n\n\n \n \nBecome an ASA member here!

SUMMARY:Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird Score Study
DESCRIPTION:The Academy of Scoring Arts is ready to kick off a new long-form study\, looking at one of the greatest musical innovators of the 20th century\, Igor Stravinsky\, and the suite from his 1910 ballet\, The Firebird. Written for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes company\, it was the first of several momentous collaborations between the two men\, and interestingly\, was before Stravinsky rose to fame. Throughout Stravinsky’s life\, he revised the score to the suite at least three times. The ASA volunteer team is hard at work on a new\, custom engraving of the work\, correcting various mistakes from older editions and readying it for detailed study in signature ASA fashion\, where we’ll have the ability to zoom into specific instruments and solo or mute at will\, enabling us to dissect the orchestration in great detail to understand how Stravinsky’s sound was put together. \nAll ASA members (including our free tier\, Chamber) are welcome to join us for this virtual event for free! This will be the first event in a multi-part study series on the Firebird. Zoom info will be sent the day before the event.

SUMMARY:Jerry Goldsmith's Mulan Score Study
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, March 18 as we examine Jerry Goldsmith’s seven-minute overture to Mulan. Veteran ASA members know that we love taking apart a Goldsmith score\, and this Academy Award nominated score offers a rich treasure trove into the fantasy writing that perfectly marries Disney with Jerry. We’ll play back the score and talk about its composition and orchestration\, and isolate elements so we can learn from the master.\n\nWe encourage attendees to purchase an inexpensive digital copy of the score ahead of time. This score was created by publisher Chris Siddall (https://www.chrissiddallmusic.com/store/c1/Featured_Products.html) and was meticulously engraved from Jerry’s original manuscript. It is available for only $14.99 at SheetMusicPlus here: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/suite-from-mulan-score-only-digital-sheet-music/22292435 While we will be showing portions of the score during the event\, we always find there is far more to dig into than we have time for\, so we encourage you to get your own full copy and support the efforts of masterful engravers like Chris\, who are constantly bringing new scores to life.

SUMMARY:John Williams' Superman Score Study Part III
DESCRIPTION:Our original Superman event back in November has spawned a trilogy of studies! The symphonic suite from John Williams’s Superman started with the villain theme (Lex Luthor and Otis)\, which consumed our first study\, then the love theme (“Can You Read My Mind”) which occupied our second study\, and now we’re on to the third and final theme\, the big Superman hero theme! Join us on ZOOM Saturday\, February 4 at 10am Pacific. As with our other score study events\, our volunteers have helped us create a MIDI mockup and custom engraving of the score\, so we’ll be able to take it apart and dig into some of the details of the amazing orchestral writing that John Williams is famous for. All ASA members (including our free tier\, Chamber) are welcome to join us for this spellbinding event.

SUMMARY:John Williams' SUPERMAN Score Study Part II
DESCRIPTION:We had a blast dissecting the villain theme at our first Superman score study event\, so much so that we ran out of time! It was an invigorating discussion\, focusing on Williams’ clever use of dissonance and scales to represent the characters of Lex Luthor and Otis. On Saturday\, December 10th\, we’ll continue our exploration of John Williams’ 1978 Superman score. For Part 2 we’ll look at the romantic harmonies and orchestration of the gorgeous love theme.\n\nIf you missed part 1\, it’s now available on our web site (https://scoringarts.com/eventlibrary/john-williamss-superman-suite-part-1/). Make sure to check out the highlight clips there\, and you can also peruse the actual study score we’re looking at (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUtwBc3VrsQ).\n\nPart 2 of the Superman study will be held on Zoom. All ASA members are welcome and will be sent the Zoom URL the day before. It will also be posted to our home page.

SUMMARY:Score Prep Workflow Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, December 3rd for our first Score Prep Workflow Workshop\, where we’ll take a look at the techniques and processes our ASA volunteers use to prep the scores we study at our events. We’ll dive in-depth into Steinberg’s Dorico music notation software and discuss our approach to tempo mapping\, note inputting\, formatting\, and more. In addition\, we’ll be inputting a short section of John William’s Superman symphonic suite into Dorico to demonstrate how we work. This informal Zoom event is free to all ASA members (Chamber\, Orchestra\, and Philharmonic) and we especially encourage active volunteers or those who are interested in joining our score prep or mockup volunteer teams to attend. Members will receive the Zoom URL via e-mail the day before\, and it will also be posted to our home page.

SUMMARY:John Williams’ Superman Score Study
DESCRIPTION:On November 5\, we return to the music of John Williams with our first-ever look at one of his most memorable and enduring scores\, Superman (1978). We’ll take apart the symphonic suite and take a close look at the villain theme\, the love theme\, and of course the main hero theme. John Williams has proved himself a master of so many genres within film scoring\, and although this score was written in the same era as Williams’s first Star Wars score (1977)\, it’s stunning to hear a such a contrasting approach to the character of the music. The Superman score has subtle romantic overtones that augment the superhero angles. We’ll look at all of this and much more! \nThis study will take place on Zoom\, and we welcome all our ASA members (Chamber\, Orchestra\, and Philharmonic) to take part. If you’re not yet a member\, sign up on our site. Even our free membership (Chamber) will get you in to this event. The Zoom URL will be mailed to all members the day before the event\, and will also be posted to our home page. Orchestra and Philharmonic members\, of course\, get access to more than 150 other studies that we’ve done\, and we encourage you to check out (https://scoringarts.com/videos). \nAfter our score study\, we’re partnering with the American Youth Orchestra\, who is performing Superman live-to-picture at UCLA’s Royce Hall at 4pm. This performance is their 14th annual Hollywood Project Concert\, and conductor Caros Izcaray will bring the entire score to life live on stage with Los Angeles’s best youth musicians. The Academy of Scoring Arts is grateful to the AYO for extending a special ASA discount to attend the concert. \nTicket link: https://www.aysymphony.org/14-annual-hollywood-project-concert-2022/\nPromo code: AYS4 ($4 off)
