SUMMARY:David Arnold's Independence Day Score Study with Chris Siddall Part 3
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! Join us on Zoom on April 30th as we continue to look at select cues from the classic sci-fi action scores: David Arnold’s 1996 score to Independence Day. This is a continuation of our score study on March 19th\, but all ASA members are invited to attend!\n\nThe ASA’s mockup team has created stems \, so we will be able to provide an instrument-by-instrument insight into how the score was put together. The score for Independence Day is perhaps best remembered for its rousing\, patriotic bombast\, however there is beauty and introspection in the quieter cues which should not be overlooked. \n \nWe will be joined by Chris Siddall\, whose company publishes the complete official score to Independence Day. We highly encourage members to purchase the full score in order to be able to study the score in much greater depth: https://www.chrissiddallmusic.com/store/p64/Independence_Day_In_Full_Score.html

SUMMARY:THE TWILIGHT ZONE: THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER / THE INVADERS
DESCRIPTION:Study leaders William V. Malpede and Josh Lucan take us on a deep dive into two episodes from the iconic television series THE TWILIGHT ZONE\, each scored by a legend in film music: “Eye of the Beholder” (1960) by Bernard Herrmann and “The Invaders” (1961) by Jerry Goldsmith. We’ll also be joined by Marc Zicree\, veteran television producer and writer\, a member of our Advisory Board\, and the author of The Twilight Zone Companion. \nGoldsmith and Herrmann each wrote numerous episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE\, and these two iconic episodes are particular masterclasses in scoring for small orchestral ensembles using minimalistic compositional techniques. \n“The Eye of the Beholder” is a dark and compelling tale about one woman’s desperate desire to conform within a dystopian society. With a surprise twist in the plot\, the episode contains both beauty and a sinister chill from Herrmann’s minimalistic score featuring 2 vibraphones and 2 harps\, backed by brooding and climactic brass and percussion punctuations. \n“The Invaders” is also famous for its twist ending\, and is unique for its complete lack of dialogue. Goldsmith’s music becomes a central player along with actress Agnes Moorehead non-speaking performance. Composing under the budgetary constraints of 60’s television\, Goldsmith’s ensemble consisted of approximately thirteen string players\, piano\, celeste\, harp\, vibraphone\, marimba\, chimes\, and the Novachord. In an early example of his atonal writing technique\, Goldsmith focuses on minor seconds and tritones to convey the horror unfolding on screen. This score also demonstrates Goldsmith’s penchant for using unusual instrument combinations as well as cutting edge electronics to achieve novel timbres in the sci-fi and horror genres.

SUMMARY:Bernard Herrmann Score Study: The Day The Earth Stood Still
DESCRIPTION:The Academy of Scoring Arts is proud to present a score study of Bernard Herrmann’s ground-breaking classic score\, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL.  Partnering\, once again with Christopher North and Rolando Gori from the Ravel NYC Group\, and featuring excerpts from Neumation Music’s recently-released full score publication. William Malpede will lead a deep dive into Herrmann’s 1951 electronic-acoustic hybrid soundtrack\, which features a unique\, never-before-heard combination of brass\, percussion\, electric strings\, theremins\, keyboards\, and backwards multi-tracking. From the notes of Neumation’s publication\, the classic science-fiction drama directed by Robert Wise “offered a potent social commentary about the intensifying Cold War that was born from a climate of fear and repression during the 1950’s.” Mr. Wise is quoted as saying\, “When we got on the music stage and started to record the cues\, I was thrilled. It was beyond anything I had anticipated.” Today’s digital technology in music has certainly taken us well into the future\, but in 1951\, Bernard Herrmann anticipates the era of electronic music\, while at the same time informing the drama with his unique brand of unsettling chromaticism\, motivic unity\, and psychologically-based\, sonic landscapes.\n\nThis study will incorporate the signature ASA score mockups\, where our volunteer teams have prepared separated instrumental recordings of the score\, enabling us to deconstruct the score as we study it and isolate parts to understand the compositional and orchestration techniques of Herrmann.\n\nThe ASA is pleased to partner with Neumation Music for this event\, and will be showing short excerpts of the orchestral score during the study. We encourage all interested attendees to support the composer and publisher by purchasing the book in order to study the score in more detail and to support the publishing of future high-quality film scores.

SUMMARY:John Powell's How to Train Your Dragon Score Study with Tim Rodier
DESCRIPTION:Join us on August 29 at 10am Pacific Time via Zoom for our first look at the music of composer John Powell\, as we tackle his 2010 score for the fantasy film How to Train Your Dragon. John’s action score sensibilities shine through every page of this score and there’s much we’ll learn as we deconstruct the score with our unique mockups and learn how he blended the “Scandinavian Scotland” flavors of the original books into the movie. We’ll learn how he incorporated bagpipes\, dulcimers\, and whistles to portray Viking protagonists. Our special guest will be Tim Rodier of Omni Music Publishing\, who has called this project “one of the finest scores Powell has ever produced.”\n\nDuring the event\, we’ll be taking a close look at two cues in particular. We encourage you to purchase the full orchestral score of How to Train Your Dragon\, which is available from Omni here: https://omnimusicpublishing.com/product/john-powells-how-to-train-your-dragon-full-orchestral-score/\n\nAll members of the Academy of Scoring Arts (Chamber\, Orchestra\, and Philharmonic) are welcome to attend this study\, free of charge. If you are not yet a member\, consider joining us. Chamber membership is free\, and Orchestra/Philharmonic membership gives you access to more than 150 other studies of classical\, film\, television\, and game music and interviews with the composers and the teams that created them.  https://scoringarts.com/membership-join/\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Bernard Herrmann's Taxi Driver Score Study

We will be looking at themes and their use throughout the film\, as well as geeking out on some in-depth score and orchestration analysis. Other topics that may come up would include the use of the jazz source music as well as the recording techniques used to capture that famous Herrmann signature. \nNeed a refresher of the film? We’re hosting a watch party and virtual chat on March 25th. Get the details and sign up here!

SUMMARY:Coming to America Score Study with Jermaine Stegall
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Sunday\, March 14 at 10am Pacific Time for an exclusive look at the music to Coming 2 America\, the long-awaited sequel to Eddie Murphy’s original 1988 comedy. Breakout composer Jermaine Stegall will join us to discuss his approach to this iconic property\, how he honored the sound of the classic original\, and how he brought his unique perspective to the new chapter. We’ll talk with Jermaine about some of the cues\, study how they were put together\, and look at how they work to picture.\n\nComing 2 America is set to debut on Amazon Prime on March 5. Set in the lush and royal country of Zamunda\, newly-crowned King Akeem (Eddie Murphy) and his trusted confidante Semmi (Arsenio Hall) embark on an all-new hilarious adventure that has them traversing the globe from their great African nation to the borough of Queens\, New York – where it all began.\n\n\n\nAll ASA members are welcome to join us for this interview. Streaming links will be sent to all members the day before the event\, and will also be posted to the ASA home page. No tickets or reservations are required.\n\nIn addition to our March 14 interview with Jermaine Stegall\, we also invite you to join our separate Watch Party for Coming 2 America on Thursday\, March 11 at 7pm Pacific Time. We’ll gather on Amazon Prime and use the Watch Party feature to watch the movie in sync with each other\, and use the chat in the sidebar to share our thoughts\, comments\, and laughs. Coming 2 America will be the fourth in our Watch Party series\, which has proven to be a wonderful way for us to share our passion for film music during this time of Covid. All ASA members are welcome to join us\, but a free ticket must be reserved in advance due to limited capacity in each Watch Party. An Amazon Prime subscription is required in order to participate. Reserve your Watch Party ticket here.

SUMMARY:Westworld: Scoring Competition Winners Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Earlier in the year\, Spitfire Audio collaborated with HBO’s Westworld to host a scoring competition and over 11 thousand composers participated. Unfortunately\, the conversation following the announcement of the winners focused less on the music and more on the controversy surrounding the selections. This online panel discussion aims to correct that. We’ll watch each composer’s submission\, discuss their individual creative process\, and give the winners an opportunity to discuss each others work as a group. We’ll cover conceptualizing a score\, the differences in process when competing for a project vs scoring a project\, as well as more “technical” topics such as melody\, harmony\, and music production. \nModerator – Greg Nicolett and Reuven Herman\nPanelists – David Kudell\, Rachel Hardy\, Andrew Morgan Smith\, Oleg Troyanovsky\, and Kacper Stachowiak \nThis event is FREE for ASA members. Become a member here and then register for this event via Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:Bernard Herrmann's Psycho Score Study
DESCRIPTION:60 years ago\, Alfred Hitchcock released PSYCHO and forever changed the fabric and DNA of the cinema’s thriller\, suspense\, and horror genre. Bernard Herrmann\, the legendary composer\, similarly changed the DNA of suspense/thriller film music and greatly contributed to the film’s success and influence. \nJoin the Academy of Scoring Arts on October 31st\, Halloween morning\, as we dissect Herrmann’s string orchestra masterwork.  We will take a detailed look at cues from the celebrated score with regard to composition\, string technique and effects\, and the role the score plays in amplifying the psychological subtext of the film. William V. Malpede and Michael McGeHee will lead the study\, joined by special guest Steve Bartek (orchestrator with Danny Elfman on PSYCHO\, 1998).
