Joe Hisaishi’s Howl’s Moving Castle Score Study

August 19, 2023 @ 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

Join us as we take a close look at Joe Hisaishi’s remarkable score for “Howl’s Moving Castle.” As the iconic musical voice behind almost every film to come out of Japan’s famed Studio Ghibli, Hisaishi’s collaboration with legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki has birthed some of the most evocative soundtracks in animated film history. We will be paying close attention to how he constructs unforgettable ear worms as well as his unique blend of classical, minimalist and Great American Songbook idioms within a film music framework.

This event will be held at the Laemmle Theater in North Hollywood. Parking lot is located at 11144 Weddington St. (one block North of the theatre) on the south side of the street. The lot is also labeled: “5250 PARKING”. Cost is $2.25 for 3.5 hours with a theatre validation and $1.75 each 15 minutes thereafter.

This score study will be in anticipation of our annual Scoring Arts field trip to the Hollywood Bowl where we will have the privilege of witnessing Joe Hisaishi lead the LA Phil, performing highlights from his film music repertoire, and culminating with the finale of Debussy’s “La Mer.”
