Michael Abels and the Music of ‘US’

December 14, 2019 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Join us on Saturday, December 14 for an unforgettable look at one of this year’s most talked-about movies and scores, Jordan Peele’s thriller US. We’ll be joined by composer Michael Abels, who previously collaborated with Peele on his 2017 blockbuster GET OUT. With an extensive background in concert music, Michael has a unique musical and cultural perspective on composing to picture and on the collaborative process when working with visual media. We will explore his approach to representing the unique theme of duality in US, why he used children’s choir, how he got the score to convey so much terror, and how he accomplished the bold new concepts that Peele wanted. In the Scoring Arts tradition, we’ll take time to listen to some of the music as well as look at clips of the film to study and discuss the concepts up close. We’ll also talk about Michael’s latest works, including an upcoming film heavily influenced by classical music, and a new ballet. Don’t miss this prime opportunity to delve deep into this award-winning film and score up close!
