Join us for the first ASA event of 2024, as we open the pages of Michael Kamen’s masterful 1999 score for The Iron Giant. This animated sci-fi film was based on a novel from 1968 and was brilliantly brought to life by Brad Bird (in his directorial debut) and Michael Kamen (in his first score for an animated movie). Set during the Cold War in 1957, the film centers on a young boy named Hogarth Hughes, who discovers and befriends a giant alien robot. With the help of a beatnik artist named Dean McCoppin, Hogarth attempts to prevent the U.S. military and Kent Mansley, a paranoid federal agent, from finding and destroying the Giant.
The score to this film is published by Chris Siddall Music Publishing (https://www. chrissiddallmusic.com/store/ p58/Iron_Giant_In_Full_Score. html) and we encourage ASA members to purchase the score ahead of time in order to enjoy the study. But even if you don’t have the score in hand, we’ll be showing excerpts from it and, in true ASA fashion, breaking it down into its component parts to understand how Kamen got these magical sounds for his score. The movie itself can be streamed with a Paramount Plus Apple TV Channel subscription, or can be rented or purchased from most major streaming platforms.
This event is FREE for all ASA members! Sign up for membership here. The Zoom info will be sent out the day before the event.
