We’re proud to announce our first-ever shared recording session – open to all members! On November 14th, we’ll be at Hollywood Scoring with a 14-piece string ensemble – 4 violin I, 4 violin II, 3 violas, 2 celli, 1 double bass. Eight selected composers will have the chance to have their music reviewed, played and recorded by a professional team. One of the goals of the ASA is to give composers the chance to work with live musicians and make recording opportunities more accessible, so we’ll be partially subsidizing the cost of the session.

This opportunity goes beyond just studio time. Every participant gets a full review leading up to the session. On October 3rd, we’ll be kicking off with an online Adventures in Listening demo derby- string writing edition! This online session is open to all and is a great way to get general feedback on your submission before the deadline. Once selected, the participating composers will also be receiving individual feedback from Tim Davies, with time to revise before hitting the podium. The goal is to have a session that runs smoothly and for eight composers to have a cue for their reel.

We highly encourage composers who have not had much recording experience to apply. Slots are limited and priority consideration will be given to Philharmonic and Orchestra members. If you’ve been thinking about upgrading your membership, now is the time! We are expanding the benefits of our membership and shared sessions will be a regular offering.

Participation Details

• Free to apply for all ASA members
  • Priority will be given to Orchestra and Philharmonic members
  • Beginning skill levels encouraged to apply
  • Please apply even if you’re not local to LA. Participants are not required to attend the session in person.
  • One submission per person
  • 8 participants will be selected
  • Each participant will receive a 15 min recording slot
  • Participants can opt to conduct their own cue

Composition Details

• All compositions must be original, no ai
• Compositions should not exceed 120 seconds
• All genres accepted
• Full use of the ensemble required
• 4/4/3/2/1
• Pre-records or additional instruments are allowed, but composition must feature the string ensemble
• Oct 9th submission will be audio only
• The 8 selected composers will be required to submit full score, parts and a Pro Tools session with a click track and stems by October 26

Demo Derby – Oct 3 10am PDT

• Only .mp3 mockup required – submission link will be available closer to the date
• Online event – open to all members
• Not mandatory, but participation is encouraged to get early feedback on your submission
• Board members Jeff Toyne and Edouard Brenneisen will run the session

Priority will be given to our Philharmonic and Orchestra members. If you’re thinking about upgrading, now is the time! All skill levels are encouraged to apply, including composers with little recording experience.

INDIVIDUAL FEEDBACK

The 8 participating composers will receive individual feedback from Tim Davies. Tim will be advising on orchestration and notation choices that will help you get the best result during the session. Board members Edouard Brenneisen and Jeff Toyne will also be advising on feedback.
